According to many scientific studies, it is determined that there are 4 different parenting styles. Authoritarion, which is a style where children are expected to obey all the strict rules set out by the parent. Authoritative parents also have a set of rules but are more laid back and democratic with their children. Permissive parents have few rules and demands from their children. They are generally very laid back. Lastly is Uninvolved parenting, these type of parents lack rules and have little to no communication with the kids.
In Wuthering heights we see more negative types of parenting rather than positive parenting style which affects many characters greatly. Personally I think Mr.Earnsaw is the perfect example of negative parenting influence on the children. When Heathcliff is first brought into Wuthering Heights Mr. Earnshaw favours him because no one else like him. But as time passes Mr. Earnsaw gives Heathcliff special treatment. he becomes his favourite and is blind to heathcliff's mistakes. Nelly explains her observations of Mr. Earnshaw when Heathcliff arrived "He took to Heathcliff strangely, believing all he said ( for that matter he said precious little, generally the truth), and petting him far above Cathy, who was too mischievous and wayward for a favourite." (Bronte, 42). Mr. Earnshaw continually disregards his own children while favouring Heathcliff. He even blames Hindley for all of the fights that Heathcliff and him get into but we all know it is partialy Heathcliff's fault. This has little to no affect on Catherine but Hindley is left bitter and cruel because his father loved an orphange more than his own child. This affect is clear because Hindley has an awful parenting style towards Hareton. Hindley threatens to harm Hareton if he does not give his father a kiss "Poor Hareton was squalling and kicking in his father's arms with all his might, and redoubled his yells when he carried him upstairs and lifted him over the banister." (Bronte, 76). It is very clear that Hindley has a lack of rules and communication for his child. Hareton is afraid and disobedient towards his father . If Nelly was not in Hareton's life, Hareton would be a wild child and he would not have acceptable beliefs and morals. Honestly, Hareton would become a more negative image of this father when he gets older if he had not recieved love and care from Nelly.
Everywhere in society we see all these parenting styles being carried out and it was a drastic postive or negative affect on the children. Usually kids with very stern and strict parents grow up to be obedient and proficient, but they rank lower in happiness, social competence and self-esteem. Authoritative parents tend to result in children who are happy, capable and successful. Children with Permissive parents also rank low in happiness and self-regulation. These children are more likely to experience problems with authority and tend to perform poorly in school. Uninvolved parents result in their kids being ranked lowest in all life ascepts. These children tend to lack self-control, have low self-esteem and are more dull than their peers.
Parents are the people children first look up to, if parents keep being a poor role model then it will become an endless cycle of negativity. It is clear that when parents are more supportive and encouraging, their children have a brighter and more promising future. I think it is really important for parents to embrace a positive parenting style, so their children can be postive and successful.
